Electric bikes for Frisco
|
Californian city San Fransisco is partnering a local car and bike sharing scheme. With the aid of Federal money, electric bikes will be made available to members of a car-sharing programme. One of the objectives of the pilot scheme, being led by the University of California-Berkeley, is to see whether this form of assisted cycling will in fact persuade more people to select the two-wheeled option rather than a car. Some 45 electric bikes will be operational within the scheme this year, with a further 45 to follow next year. Part of the logic also involves the gradual move by the younger generation away from owning a car, to using a car when necessary, especially for city dwellers. Bike-sharing might be a way of enabling this concept to apply to bikes too.
