Intelligent road pricing has a role to play
|
A test undertaken in the Belgian city of Leuven has demonstrated that intelligent road charging has a real role to play in reducing traffic congestion. During the months of September 2011 to January 2012, drivers were observed in terms of their normal routes and times, and then were shown the effect of different behaviour in these domains, if road pricing based on the two criteria was in place. The results showed a noticeable change in behaviour when the fictitious cost was shown to drivers via their on-board computers. More than half of the drivers, who covered 100,000 km over 11,000 journeys, changed their habits. This included using bikes or public transport. The test was undertaken by IBM, NXP, Touring, Mobistar, Magicview, NSL and Mobility for Leuven.
